Good morning, it’s Penny Kittle from New Hampshire and I’ve just got through reading through your site, which was just absolutely delightful! I would love to know all of you as colleagues, have a cup of coffee – a wonderful Italian coffee, perhaps – and talk about reading and writing workshop. I’m sitting here at my desk, in my office in New Hampshire, and I have to show you one thing. I have been working for a while on this idea of using the amazing writing of some people that I admire, to get the kids to starting writing. And so, in the midst of your website was a kid’s two-page spread on Harry Potter and I have been working on one obviously, barely started it. I have started that that was a kind of a mess, and then uh – this is all just crafts that I’ve noticed from setting care to chapter titles, names of spells, names of characters, way she describes things – and now I’m working on actual examples from Sorcerer’s Stone, on things I can hear-smell-see-taste, sensory details, distracts me “Wow there’s a kid doing exactly all the work that I’m doing”.
But, I’m sitting here this morning working on a speech and struggling with my own, trying to make sense of this kind of complex thing I’m working on, and I just love that we’re in community with that. You know, many of you wrote about “how the use of writing and how the use of reading life too help these kids I’m working with”, and it is the superpower that we hold, that our lives as readers and writers are on display because we’re the teacher, the guide, and to show them the struggle, how we read a complex book, how we make meaning when things are not as clear, in Italian! I think it’s just… Uh, you guys are forging a path that I can’t think of many people that have tried. It’s truly so exciting to me, and I love the opportunity to just say “keep on, gather, think together, collaborate on things that work”.

Ma, mentre sono seduta qui stamattina a lavorare su un discorso, combattendo con me stessa per dare un senso a questa specie di cosa complicata su cui sto lavorando, amo il fatto che lo stiamo facendo come comunità. Vedete, molti di voi hanno scritto su "come l'uso della scrittura e dell'abitudine a leggere aiuta questi ragazzi con cui lavoro" [n.d.t. Mrs. Kittle si riferisce allo scambio di esperienze di sperimentazione in classe con i docenti capigruppo in formazione] ed è il superpotere che possediamo: le nostre vite da lettori e scrittori sono in primo piano perché siamo il docente, la guida, e mostriamo loro lo sforzo, come noi ci approcciamo a un libro complesso, come ricostruiamo il significato quando le cose non sono così chiare… e voi lo fate in Italiano! Penso che sia semplicemente... che voi stiate tracciando un percorso tale che non mi vengono in mente molte persone che ci abbiano provato; è davvero molto eccitante per me e sono felice di avere l'opportunità di dire solo "continuate, unitevi, pensate insieme, collaborate su cose che funzionano".
